Berri AnglesThis is a roadtest of a product I found out about at Quilt Market in Pittsburg. We met with Vicki Lynn Oehlke and her son while we were cruising the aisles. The product is called
Berri Angles

Berri Angles are self-sticking tools to make half-square triangles and snowball or square in a square blocks. They are from
Willowberry Lane, who also have their own lines of fabric with Maywood Studio, and their own line of patterns. The distributor in Australia is Lloyd Curzon, check out their rep,
Di Mill’s blog for all the latest on Lloyd Curzon fabrics. The product is a sticker that you position onto the squares you are sewing at a size according to your pattern. You then sew along the marked lines for very accurate triangles with no bias. This is a bonus for beginners or those with accuracy problems. Also a great benefit if you are working with flannel or fine wool and are worried about fabrics shifting.
The rolls of stickers come in several different sizes, and if they don’t have the size you need you can piggy back them to create a new size. The instructions are very simple and explain how to use the stickers and how to piggy back if required.
I have tried all the stickers out, and while I have to say I wouldn’t use them myself (I’ve pieced enough bias in my time to be pretty confident that I’m accurate at least most of the time!), they would be great for someone not so confident or in need of super-accurate triangles. I plan to test them out on my classes in the coming weeks – be warned girls!
Below is a demo of how to use the half-square triangle Berri Angles. I have started with a 2 7/8” square for a finished 2” square.
Step 1. Cut squares of two fabrics to the size called for in your pattern. These unfinished squares should be 7/8” larger than the finished size. The 7/8” allows for seam allowance for you to complete two half square triangles in one step.

Step 2. Layer your two fabric squares right sides together.

Step 3. Remove one Berri Angles label from the roll.

Step 4. Working from the back of the label, remove the label backing from each end tab. Lift the end tabs slightly to open the slits at the end of the label.

Step 5. Place one corner of your layered squares into one corner slit.

Step 6. Insert the opposite corner into the remaining corner slit. Press the end tabs down with your fingers.

Step 7. Work from the front of the label. Sew down both dotted stitching lines.

Step 8. Cut apart on the cutting line.

Step 9. Peel away the paper, holding the seam allowances as you do so to avoid stretching the points. Press open. You have made two, very accurate Half Square Triangles.
