Selvedge Postcard Quilt
Let’s make a selvedge project
by Erica Spinks
This is a small postcard-sized quilt that is a fun project to get you started.
1. Draw a small tulip shape on a piece of paper. This will be your template. Don’t be too concerned about drawing a perfect shape – it is meant to be folksy.
2. Cut a square of quilter’s muslin to use as a foundation, making sure it is larger than your template.
3. Place the first selvedge strip on the square, with the woven edge along the bottom of the foundation. Using neutral-coloured cotton thread, stitch along the woven edge to secure it to the foundation.
4. Place the next selvedge strip with the woven edge overlapping the raw edge of the first selvedge. Stitch along the woven edge, through the first selvedge and the foundation.
5. Continue overlapping and sewing selvedges in this way until you have covered the foundation square, as shown in the photo.
6. Pin the template to the square and cut the tulip. You may prefer to have the writing on your tulip aligned with the top of the flower.
7. Appliqué the tulip to a background fabric and then press.
8. Layer the fabric with thin batting and backing fabric and quilt the background.
9. Bind the quilt and enjoy!
We’d love to see your selvedge projects.
